Jon Stewart vs. Trump-Friendly Boss David Ellison: Is He Getting Fired? (2025)

Jon Stewart's bold stance against his Trump-aligned boss, David Ellison, continues to make headlines. In a recent conversation with MTV co-founder Tom Freston, Stewart couldn't resist taking a jab at Ellison's political leanings.

"We're heading towards a future where we all work for one person, and that person is likely to be an Ellison," Stewart quipped, leaving no room for ambiguity about his feelings towards his new employer.

But here's where it gets controversial: Stewart's comments come at a time when he has just renewed his contract with Paramount, now owned by Skydance. Despite this, he hasn't held back on expressing his concerns about Ellison's close ties with MAGA.

"Talk-show hosting is a precarious business these days," Stewart said, adding, "I'm not sure if there was a tweet from the FCC that sealed my fate." He was, of course, referring to Brendan Carr's notorious tweets threatening late-night hosts who criticize Trump.

Stewart's contract renewal with Paramount, a Skydance company, earlier this month secured his position at The Daily Show for another year. However, his worries about Ellison's influence on media remain.

Since Ellison reportedly has his eyes on acquiring Warner Bros., Stewart's sarcasm reached new heights. He told Freston, "Skydance is fantastic. I can't say enough good things about them. They should gobble up everyone and hand it all to the president."

Ellison's appointment of conservative journalist Bari Weiss as the new head of CBS News after Skydance acquired Paramount has raised eyebrows. It leaves many wondering about the future of anti-Trump hosts like Stewart under this new leadership.

The company's decision to axe Stephen Colbert's The Late Show just days after he accused them of bribing the president to approve the Skydance merger only adds fuel to the fire.

Stewart's uncertainty about his own future at the time was palpable. "They might sell the whole place for parts, I just don't know," he said in July, before his contract renewal this month.

On Sunday, Stewart expressed a sense of longing for the past, when media wasn't being broken up and sold to Silicon Valley elites. He reminisced about his early 2000s days at MTV under Freston's leadership, saying, "You seemed to lead with your heart, always being considerate."

In contrast, Stewart feels a lack of humanity from the executives he now works for at Paramount. "I don't know if they feel the other humans in the room anymore," he told Freston.

And this is the part most people miss: Stewart's comments aren't just about his personal situation. They're a reflection of the broader concerns many have about the future of media and its potential to be influenced by powerful individuals with specific political agendas.
