Eidos-Montreal's Recent Layoffs: A Troubling Trend?
Eidos-Montreal, the studio behind the critically acclaimed Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy and supporting games like Tomb Raider, has recently faced a wave of layoffs, leaving many employees searching for new opportunities. This isn't the first time the studio has had to downsize; a previous round of cuts in March affected 75 individuals, attributed to the end of certain mandates. However, the latest round of layoffs has raised concerns about the studio's future.
On LinkedIn, several former employees shared their experiences, expressing their love for the company and their disappointment at leaving. One employee, Samuel Daher, the gameplay director, wrote, 'Hey there! Was working at Eidos, loved it and would have stayed, but times are difficult.' This sentiment is shared by many, as at least a dozen employees are now on the job market.
The studio's focus seems to be shifting towards projects with Microsoft and Xbox, such as Grounded 2 and Fable. However, there's also an internal project that began development in 2019, which sources indicate has no way of recouping its current costs. This project, along with the others, will likely wrap up soon, but the future doesn't look bright for Eidos-Montreal's workforce.
Insider Gaming has reached out to both Eidos-Montreal and its parent company, Embracer, for comment, but no responses have been received. Embracer has historically declined to provide official statements on layoffs and internal projects. The studio's future remains uncertain, leaving employees and industry observers alike wondering what the next chapter will hold for Eidos-Montreal.
